The site has several memorials honoring 37 U.S. soldiers who lost their lives in the crash of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter (tail number 66-19023) during a training deployment in this nearby area on August 18, 1971.

The site is situated on the western outskirts of Pegnitz, about 2 km from the town center, on a wooded ridge between the A9 and B2. It can be reached in a few minutes by car via the B2 and a side road, or by foot and bicycle using local trails. A nearby trailhead provides short walking access to the memorial.
