Information panel:
The Germans held the Hill 20 near Fouville. They set up on an artillery fire point on Company G's position causing heavy casualties. The mortar firing section received an order to rejoin the 2nd artillery firing position.
Sergeant Smith didn't agree about the order. His commander Ronald Snyder told him: "Don't worry, if anything should happen to you, I promise to lay promise flowers on your grave." The German artillery spotted the progression of the paratroopers. This provoked a flood of fire from the Germans and the shells rained down. A piece of shrapnel exploded a grenade which was in the pocket of the soldier Robert HERRIN killing Sergeant Stanley S. SMITH and soldier Robert HERRIN and cutting the leg of William C. WALTER and Robert E. HOLTZMANN. Both soldiers died a few minutes later in the Field Hospital Emergency Services.
In June 1969, the platoon leader, Ronald SNYDER came back to Normandy. He laid this memorial plaque in honour of American soldiers who were killed on this spot on 6th June 1944.
