Monument
A rectangular bronze bas-relief on top of a monument written in French commemorating PFC Chuhak, T5 Cornell, and Cpl Criswell, who were killed in August 1944. This relief is the work of Georges Crouzat, one of the most creative artists in his specialty. The artist's signature appears at the bottom right of the plaque. The bas-relief came from a well-known foundry, the Susse Frères company in Paris. It was made in 1946 and depicts the moving silhouette of the three soldiers resting on a bed of laurel leaves.
On August 21, 1944, the village of Bellegarde in France became a crucial battleground as Allied forces advanced to liberate Western Europe from Nazi control. The operation, part of the broader Allied campaign following the D-Day landings, involved intense fighting between American troops and entrenched German defenders. On this day, three American soldiers Chuhak, Cornell, and Criswell played a vital role in overcoming German resistance. Their sacrifice, which resulted in their deaths, highlights the high cost of liberation efforts. After Bellegarde was freed, the village began to recover, and a memorial was erected to honor these soldiers and their contribution to the liberation of France
