Monument
A rough-hewn stone monument commemorating Operation Cobra, the breakout offensive launched by the U.S. First Army on July 25, 1944, under the leadership of General Omar N. Bradley and General J. Lawton Collins, commander of the U.S. VII Corps. The inscription on the monument is in French.
On July 25, 1944, the U.S. First Army launched Operation Cobra with a massive bombing campaign near Saint-Lô, breaking through German defenses despite tragic friendly fire incidents. General Omar N. Bradley designed the operation, while General J. Lawton Collins, leading the U.S. VII Corps, executed it with rapid ground advances. The VII Corps' success opened the path to liberating Brittany and contributed significantly to the German collapse in Normandy.
