James Woodrow Brown was born on November 10, 1922 in West Virginia, USA. He was the son of Mr. James "Walter" Brown (1882-1955) and Mrs. Lillie Mae Smith-Brown (1880-1961) of Crystal. Brown served served in North Africa, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium as a Private in Company I, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He participated in combat jumps over Normandy and the Netherlands. He was Killed in Action on January 3, 1945 (at the age of 22) and is now buried in Tabernacle Hill Cemetery, Montcalm, Mercer County, West Virginia, USA.
