The family settled in present-day Anmoore, West Virginia. Before enlisting shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Cavallaro worked for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG). He was sent to Tunisia with the 505th PIR and then served as an invaluable asset to his unit as a translator during the Sicilian and Italian campaigns. Cavallaro was killed (at age 23) while serving with Company I of the 505th during the unit's assault of Fosse, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge and is now buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Clarksburg, West Virginia.
