Admiral Gleaves was born in Nashville Tennessee. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Gleaves served on the USS Hartford and Trenton and later was appointed an Ensign in 1881. Gleaves was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1915 and commanded the Cruiser and Transport Force during WWI.He was awared the Army and Navy Distinguished Service Medals and promoted to Admiral in 1919.
