Elmer L. Murray, Jr. was born in 1921, in Iowa. He resided in Los Angeles County, California prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on August 20, 1942, in Los Angeles, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building of aircraft and also as Married.

Elmer served as a Sergeant, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He was a passenger on C-47A #42-93095 that was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire during the Normandy invasion and crashed at Beuzeville-au-Plain, Manche, France during the war. Sgt Murray is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Lincoln Cemetery, Iowa.
