Hilbert J. Schmitz was born on July 18, 1913 Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa. He was a son of Henry and Sophia (Hansman) Schmitz. He was raised on the family farm south of Carroll and attended SS Peter and Paul school. Hilbert was inducted into the service in January 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Technician Fourth Grade in the 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on November 15, 1944 in Germany at the age of 31 and is now buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry monument in Henri-Chapelle, Belgium and ranked as a Corporal.
