Thad O. Chafin, Jr. was born on August 2, 1920 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. He was the son of Thad O. Chafin and Rebecca J. Boyd Chafin. He enlisted in the Army on September 16, 1940 in North Carolina. Thad served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a First Lieutenant in the 1st Infantry Division. He died on November 22, 1944 in Germany at the age of 24 and is now buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina, USA.
