Gilbert Merle Bowen was born on October 26, 1922. He was the son of Walter Ernest Bowen and Bertha Emma Ross Bowen. He enlisted in the Army on February 3, 1943 in Rutland, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Guard and/or watchmen and also as Single, without dependents. He resided in Bennington County, Vermont prior to the war. served as a Private First Class, Company B, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. Gilbert served as a Private First Class in Company B, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He was Killed in Action on September 18, 1944 in the Battle of Aachen, Germany at the age of 21 and is now buried in Readsboro Village Cemetery, Readsboro, Bennington County, Vermont, USA.
