William Franklin Durham, III was born on October 21, 1911 in Howertons, Essex County, Virginia. He was the son of William Franklin Durham and Eva Jane Coleman Durham. Had worked in the insurance business for Home Beneficial in Tappahannock, VA. William was inducted into the army as a Private in March, 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died in Aachen, Germany and was listed as missing in action on November 22, 1944 and was later found buried in an unmarked grave in Wenau, Germany. On May 14, 1949 his body was brought back to the US and he was buried in the Durham family plot in Howertons Baptist Church which adjoins "Lombardy Grove", the home where he was born.
