Garland Bryan Combs was born on April 17, 1914 in Romney, Hampshire County, West Virginia. He was the son of Alfred Jeremiah Combs and Senie Rose Whetzel Combs. Garland served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on November 28, 1944 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium.
