Vernon Elwood Holmes was born on February 16, 1918 in Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky. He was the son of James Nicholas Holmes and Sarah Hicks Holmes. Vernon entered the military service in Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on October 16, 1944 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium. He also has a cenotaph located in Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, USA.
