Elmer Laverne Hess was born on November 7, 1922. He was the son of Hartsell H. Hess and Clara E. Hess. Elmer entered the military service in Illinois and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Sergeant in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on December 10, 1944 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium. He also has a memorial located in Oak Knoll Memorial Park Cemetery, Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois, USA.
