Captain Macchi took off from the Amberieux-en-Bugey airport on October 30 as part of a convoy mission from Dole-Tavaux to Marseille. Due to the heavy fog that day, his plane, a B-25 Mitchell C-15-42-32428, crashed on a hillside 17km from Bourg-en-Bresse. He also has a cenotaph located in Oak Hill Memorial Park, McAlester, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, USA.
