James served as a Private, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war. He was Killed in Action on September 14, 1944 at the age of 19 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium. He also has a cenotaph located in Saint Stanislaus Cemetery, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland, USA.
