Gordon Urck Wood was born on May 9, 1916 in Murray County, Georgia. He was the son of Drew Frank Wood and Hazel Gladys Urick Wood. He enlisted as a Private July 13, 1941, at Fort McPherson, Atlanta. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. Private Wood had participated in the Sicilian and African Campaigns as well as the invasion of France and Germany. He was Killed in Action on October 12, 1944 in a plane crash in Germany at the age of 28 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium.
