When James Joseph Mallen was born on June 4, 1905, in Manhattan, New York, his father, Raymond, was 20 and his mother, Mary, was 17. He married Margaret F. McDonough on September 7, 1930, in Queens, New York. They had one child during their marriage. He served in the US Army from 1943-1946. He died in January 1993 and is now buried in the American Legion Mausoleum just west of Paris.
