James Daniel English was born in New Orleans on 8 April 1905, the son of James Daniel English and Lena Wallace. He enlisted in the Army from Houston, TX on 7 March 1941 when he was 35 years old and married to Mildred D. English. His war time role was organizing shows for the troops. He participated in the Normandy invasion and made regular visits to Normandy for the rest of his life. After the war he stayed in France and worked as a boxing promoter while married to Simone Francine Catel. He died in the American Hospital in Neuilly and was buried at the American Legion Mausoleum just west of Paris, in 1974 at the age of 69.
