When George Wiloughby Balkema was born on October 13, 1896, in North Muskegon, Michigan, his father, James, was 40 and his mother, Rosa, was 36. He had five brothers and two sisters. George was a US military veteran during World War II who was buried in the American Legion Mausoleum just west of Paris. He died on November 14, 1973 in the American Hospital in Neuilly at the age of 77. He lived in France for 50 years.
