William Pirtle Herod was born on November 2, 1894, in Japan, the son of Annette and Joseph. He was 23 years old and living in Indianapolis, Indiana, when he registered for the World War I draft. William was a US military veteran whose ashes are interred in the American Legion Mausoleum just west of Paris in 1961. He died in Biarritz in south-west France and was cremated in Paris.
