When David Wolfe Shourds was born in January 1896 in New Jersey, his father, George, was 37 and his mother, Margaret, was 34. He had three brothers and four sisters. David died in the American Hospital in Neuilly, at the age of 41 as a result of being gassed while serving with the US Army in World War I. He died on April 10, 1937 is now buried in the American Legion Mausoleum just west of Paris.
