Carl Edison Cole, II was born on August 27, 1919. He served in the 561st Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on 42-39894 "Boomerang Barbara" during World War II. A member of the Payne crew, he was killed when their plane crashed on February 20, 1944 at the age of 20. It is unclear where he is actually buried, but he has two memorials located in Newton Cemetery, Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts and Maplewood Cemetery, Saint Elmo, Fayette County, Illinois. Second Lieutenant Cole was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
