Lt. Phillip Junior "Cookie" Comella was born on May 9, 1919 and raised in Saint Joseph, Missouri. He enlisted in the Navy, December 7, 1937 and was Discharged from the Navy on December 5, 1941. He then enlisted in the Army Air Force on April 16, 1942. He graduated from The Pampa Army Flying School of Pampa, Texas. Phillip had flight training at several different places (states). Class 43-D on April 22, 1943, he completed his flight training and received his silver pilot's wings.

1Lt Comella served in the 560th Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy during World War II. He was the Pilot of #42-31149 "My Day" aircraft. He was declared "Missing in Action" on December 30, 1943 and is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. Phillip was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
