Comments:

Norman Frank Kajut was born in 1921 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Frank and Cecelia Kajut, and had two sisters.

After entering the military service, he received training as a Radio Operator and an aerial gunner. He was assigned to a combat crew for training, and deployed to Knettishall, England with this crew in 1943 for service with the 562nd Bomb Squadron of the 388th Bomb Group.

On February 10, 1944, he participated in a bombing mission to Brunswick, Germany. Reports indicate that flak was intense over the target, and that enemy fighters engaged the bomber formation.

One observer stated it appeared that the aircraft took a direct hit in the wing, which set the fuel tanks on fire. They further stated they believed the aircraft to be a straggler and shot down by fighters. Official records indicate the aircraft was lost because of flak.

Evidently, most of the crew managed to bail out as official reports state four were killed and seven were taken prisoner. The aircraft crashed near the village of Uitgeest, Holland. Parts of this aircraft were recovered in 1985 and utilized to make a memorial for the crew.

TSgt Norman F. Kajut is buried in the American Cemetery at Margraten, Holland. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
