Joseph Paul Lechowski was born on October 30, 1922 in Dickson City, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. He resided in Lackawanna County, Pennsylania prior to the war. Joseph served as a Second Lieutenant and Tail Gunner on B-17G #42-40054, 561st Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

2Lt Lechowski was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was struck by B-17G #42-37886, which had been badly damaged by German aircraft, which caused them both to crash near Schoonberkerveld, southeast of Emmen, Holland (Netherlands). He is now buried in the Visitation of Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery, Dickson City, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
