John Henry J. McCullough, Jr. entered the military service in New York. He served in the 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner of an aircraft during World War II. He was Killed in Action on January 29, 1944 and is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France. SSgt McCullough was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
SSgt John H.J. McCullough Jr., left waist gunner of the B-17 42-3285 “Mary Ellen”, took off from station 136 Knettishall, Suffolk, UK at 0730 on a bombing mission over Frankfurt. The plane was hit by flak at noon, forcing the crew to bail out. Four crew members did not make it out, including McCullough.
