Jack Dean Merkley was born on April 25, 1920 in Blackfoot, Bingham County, Idaho. He was the son of Chauncey Merkley and Rosella Findlay Merkley. he served in the 560th Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. He died on December 10, 1944 in North Ayrshire, Scotland and is now buried in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Lincoln County, Nebraska, USA in a common grave with his crew. 2Lt Merkley was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
