Robert C. Mesang was born on April 17, 1922 in Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in October 1942 and received his training at Kelly Field, TX; Buckley Field, CO; Tyndall Field, FL; Salt Lake City, UT; and the Alexandria Army Air Base, LA. Robert served in the 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and tail gunner of #42-3505 aircraft during World War II. He was declared "Missing in Action" on November 29, 1943 and is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He also has a cenotaph located in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin. Sgt Mesang was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
