John Henry Pointer was born on April 22, 1922 in Mississippi. He was the son of William Watkins Pointer and Ida Lawrence Scott Pointer. He served in the 561st Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a First Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of #44-6123 "Girl of My Dreams" aircraft during World War II. John was Killed in Action on August 16, 1944 during a bombing raid on Zeitz, Germany. All 10 of the crew members lost their lives in a mid-air collision with another B-17 coming off a turn after a bomb run. He is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA in a common grave with his crew. 1Lt Pointer was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
