Walter Scott Reed was born in 1922 in Oklahoma. He resided in Sebastian County, Arkansas prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on November 12, 1942 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a industry clerk and also as Single, without dependents. Walter served as a Staff Sergeant and Right Waist Gunner on B-17G #42-40054, 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
Walter was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was struck by B-17G #42-37886, which had been badly damaged by German aircraft, which caused them both to crash near Schoonberkerveld, southeast of Emmen, Holland (Netherlands). He is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
