Robert Murray “Bob” Sweeney was born on May 21, 1923 in Crownsville, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He was the son of Murray S. Sweeney and Frances E. Sweeney Sears. He resided in Anne Arundel County, Maryland prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on November 30, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a stationary engineer and also as Single, without dependents. Robert served as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner on B-17G "Blitzing Betsy" #42-37886, 552nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Robert was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, after being badly damaged by German aircraft, collided with B-17G #42-40054 and crashed. He is now buried in the Glen Haven Memorial Park, Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA. Sgt Sweeney was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
