Charles Edward Walkovich was born on November 17, 1917 in Brockton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He served in the 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group (Heavy), as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner of #43-37520 aircraft during World War II. Charles was one of the nine crew members who perished on 8 June 1944 when a fire ignited a bomb aboard their B-17 Flying Super Fortress bomber, "Double Trouble," causing a midair explosion over England. Initially interred in the squadron's cemetery near Cambridge, England, their remains were subsequently returned to the U.S., buried in a single bronze casket in the Nashville National Cemetery, Madison, Davidson County, Tennessee. SSgt Walkovich was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
