John Clifford Kuntz, 21 years of age, was born in August 1897 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the son of Antone Kuntz and Margaret Leith Kuntz. He was a former employee of the Harris-Polk Hat Company. John served with the First Regiment on the Mexican border in 1916 and served overseas from May 19, 1918 to Sept 26, 1918 in the 138th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division. He was killed on the east side of Vauquios Hill, France on September 26, 1918 by an artillery fragmentation on the very first day of the Battle of the Argonne. He is now buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
