When John Albert Stilwell was born on 11 June 1914 in New York City, New York, USA, his father, Philemon, was 22 and his mother, Adelaide, was 20. He had three children. He prepared at the Trinity School in N.Y.C. and majored in English at Princeton University. John joined the British Royal Navy in early 1941 and retired as a Lieutenant in the Fleet Air Ann in 1946 after considerable sea duty.

He was told that a 1941 act of Congress caused him to lose his U.S. citizenship. since he served in the Royal Navy. He subsequently regained it by another congressional act because he served on the side of the Allies.

John spent his business career in the advertising business. He enjoyed golf and antique furniture. He was a past president of the American Club in London and was active in the Princeton Club of that city.

JOHN died on June 11, 1990 in Sussex, England, where he lived for many years.
