Francis Mason Hayes was born on Sept. 14, 1912, and was educated at the University of Cambridge and at Guy’ s Hospital, qualifying M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. in 1940. After holding a post at the Miller General Hospital he entered the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in October 1941. He was serving on H.M. Destroyer Veteran when he was lost.
