Wendell Theron Helwig, aged 19, was born on January 21, 1925, in Alma Center, Wisconsin. He was the son of Alvin W. Helwig and Vera E. Helwig. Wendell served in the 363rd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was killed in a mid-air collision with another P-51 plane over Germany on December 24, 1944. 1LT Helwig is buried now in the East Lawn Cemetery, Alma Center, Jackson County, Wisconsin, USA. His name is listed on the Leiston Airfield Memorial in England, but his middle initial is inscribed as "D."
