Elmer John Kiel was born on December 27, 1915 in Columbus, Indiana. He was the son of Elmer Laurence Kiel and Margaret Andrews Kiel. Elmer served in the 86th Troop Squadron, 437th Troop Carrier Group as a Flight Officer during World War II.

F/O Kiel was a glider pilot in support of the D-Day landings at Normandy in what was known as Glider Operation Neptune. He was killed when his glider was hit by enemy flak. Adrian Rothrock Loving was also killed aboard CG-4A (43-40197). F/O kiel is buried now in the US Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery, Washington, District of Columbia, District of Columbia, USA.
