Jean V. Herko was born on December 26, 1918 in Buffalo, New York. She resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war. Jean served as a Second Lieutenant, 814th Medical Air Evacuation Squadron, Nurses Corps, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Jean died in the "Line Of Duty" while a passenger on C-47 #41-18603, which took off from Florence Airport en route to Rome, and crashed near Montieri, Italy due to extreme weather during the war. There were 22 passengers and 4 crew members on this flight. 20 passengers and 3 crew member perished. C-47 #41-18603 was part of the 35th Troop Carrier Squadron, 64th Troop Carrier Group. 2LT Herko was originally interred in Italy and was later repatriated in the US on January 20, 1950. She is buried now in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA, together with other passengers and crew members of the plane.
