Samuel Clark Welch was born on July 17, 1919 in Maxwell, Iowa. He was the son of James M. Welch and Daisy L. Thompson Welch. He served in the 83rd Troop Squadron, 437th Troop Carrier Group as a Flight Officer during World War II.

On September 17, 1944, a CG-4A WACO glider crashed in Mariekerke Belgium, on its way to Eindhoven Drop Zone, killing all aboard, the riders were members of Signals Company, 101 Airborne division and one British Royal Signals man but also the glider pilot Samuel C. Welch. F/O Welch flew Normandy and Southern France mission on 6th of June and 15th of August 1944 before Holland. He is buried now in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
