Joseph "Joe" Cervo was born on April 3, 1925 in Rome, New York. Shortly after graduation Joe enlisted in the Army to fight in the war as his father John had done in the First World War. He served in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division as a Private during World War II.

PVT Cervo was a passenger on the C-47A Skytrain Troop Transport #42-100672 "Clay Pigeon" on a paratroop drop mission to Eindhoven, The Netherlands during Operation Market Garden. They carried 18 Paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division. They were attacked by enemy flak and the plane was on fire before reaching the drop zone. They crash landed 6 miles south-east of Eindhoven Air Field.

PVT Cervo was taken as a POW following the crash and and died the next day in a prisoner of war camp of injuries he sustained. He is buried now in the Rome Cemetery, Rome, Oneida County, New York, USA.
