Rowland H. Evans was born on July 5, 1916. He served in the 535th Bomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group (Heavy) as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot on the B-17 #42-29923 "Lucky Strike" during World War II. On January 4, 1944, his aircraft, having been battle damaged on a bombing mission to Kiel, Germany, ran out of gas and crash landed in Cawston, Norfolk, England, while returning to base. Lt. Kraut and Sergeant Rivera (his crewmates) were fatally injured. The eight remaining crew members (including 2LT Evans) survived.

He was assigned on his next mission as a Co-pilot of “Bermondsay Battler,” B-17 tail #42-39895, when it went down over Detmold, Germany, on February 22, 1944. 2LT Evans was killed in the crash. He is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
