Robert Elder Stewart was born on 21 July 1922 in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. He was the son of Neil Stewart Elder and Ottleana Albertena Moberg Elder. He graduated from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Minnesota in June 1940. He attended Duluth Junior College for 2 years before enlisting in the Army.

Robert served in Company C, 62nd Infantry Battalion, 14th Armored Division, as a Private during World War II. He was killed in action in France, on the road leading to Lafrimbolle while his unit, due to join Schirmeck, ran into an enemy roadblock. He is now buried in the Oneota Cemetery, Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota, USA.
