Richard Ernest Diete was born on October 27, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the 334th Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator on the B-17G #42-31123 during World War II. At about 8:30 am on November 19, 1943, B17 #42-31123 took off on a mission to Germany. When it failed to gain flying speed and was banking to turn, it stalled and crashed at Redlingfield, Suffolk. All men aboard were killed in the crash. 2Lt Diete is now buried in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Rock Island County, Illinois, USA.
