LT Howard R. Smith was from Adams County, IL and was killed in an Airplane accident while training atthe Turnberry Airfield Royal Flying Corps (RFC) Flight school (Turnberry School of Aerial Gunnery and Fighting).
He is remembered on the British Turnberry War Memorial (Turnberry School of Aerial Gunnery and Fighting Memorial) along with three other Aviators, one, 1LT Squires, Smith served at a pallbearer at his funeral the month before his own death.
