John Thomas Wheatley was born on June 25, 1925, in Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky. He was the son of Leonard Joseph Wheatley and Lucy Catherine Thomas Wheatley.

John served in the 406th Bomber Squadron, 801st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Radio Operator/Gunner on the B-24 #42-52650 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on January 3, 1945, in the takeoff crash of his airplane. It crashed in the village on Aston Clinton in England, killing all aboard. 2Lt Wheatley is now buried in the Calvary Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA.
