George Whitney Hawkes was born on December 20, 1925. He was the son of Ralph Lee Hawkes and Pearle Luella Hawkes.

George served in the 406th Bomber Squadron, 801st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Gunner on the B-24 #42-52650 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on January 3, 1945, in the takeoff crash of his airplane. It crashed in the village on Aston Clinton in England, killing all aboard. Sgt Hawkes is now buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Templeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA.
