Merle S. Schutt was born on May 28, 1925. He graduated in January 1943 from Steuben High School in Chicago. He served in the 849th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Tail Gunner of a B-17 during World War II.

Merle was Killed in Action on January 11, 1945, when his airplane was hit by flak and went down over the target. Unfortunately, his body was never recovered. He was declared Missing in Action on January 11, 1946, and is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
