George E. Jones served in the 861st Bomber Squadron, 493rd Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Gunner during World War II. On June 14, 1944, his crew took off from Debach on an operational mission to Laon Airfield, France. On return at 9945 hrs, their aircraft spun in and crashed at Foxboro Hall Farm, Melton, Suffolk, while attempting an emergency landing. Their aircraft was returning from operations in Chievres with one engine out. All crew members were killed in the crash.
SSgt Jone's name is listed on the 493rd Bomber Group Honor Roll located in St. Mary the Virgin Church, Clopton, England, but his rank is inscribed as a PVT.
